OUR ACTIVITIES
MASS STERILISATION
This programme is carried out at the kennels provided by the municipal corporation of Mumbai. On an average we carry out around 250 sterilisations a month. We have neutered over 33,500 street dogs.
Originally, we were allotted the A to E wards in South Mumbai. Now we cover the whole island city (Cuffe Parade to Mahim/Sion). The dog population in these areas has come down drastically due to our efforts.
THE STERILISATION PROCEDURE
We follow the guidelines of the World Health Organisation and the Animal Welfare Board of India (Ministry of Environment & Forests). Street dogs are caught by the catching staff of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation by the sack-and-loop method. The WSD ambulance also goes out on a regular basis to catch the dogs. Some are also brought in by our team and volunteers. A number of dogs are also brought by the street and slum-dwellers who look after them.
Dogs who are in good condition are then surgically neutered by qualified and experienced veterinary surgeons. Ovario-hysterectomy is performed on the females and castration on the males. We believe that animal care should follow very high standards, therefore a lot of emphasis is placed on hygiene and cleanliness. The operated dogs are kept for a period of 7 to 10 days, until they are completely healed. Post-operative care is given by our veterinary physicians. The diet at our centres is vegetarian, and includes recipes for dogs with special dietary needs.
The dog's ear is notched while it is under anaesthesia. The dog can easily be identified as sterilised.
The dogs are then vaccinated against rabies and released, either by the Corporation catching staff or by our staff/ volunteers.
Although operating females has more immediate results on the dog population, we believe it is very important to sterilize males as well, since this reduces barking, fighting and aggression. We maintain a 60:40 ratio.
Dogs who are not fit for surgery are treated by us and operated only when they are in good health.
The results of our work can be clearly seen in the areas we have covered, especially South Mumbai, where the number of dogs and the number of dog-related complaints have reduced perceptibly over the years. The number of human rabies deaths has also dropped by over 90% since the programme was implemented.
WHAT MAKES OUR STERILISATION PROGRAMME UNIQUE?
-
Each dog is given a seven-in-one vaccination before sterilisation.
-
Stringent hygienic procedures are followed to ensure the safety of each dog. Great attention is paid to post-operative care.
-
To sterilise the maximum number of dogs in an area, we make contact with street - dwellers and slum - dwellers and persuade them to have their dogs neutered by us.
-
We encourage the public to get involved in the programme. For instance, we meet citizen's groups and ask them to have their neighbourhood dogs sterilized by us.
RABIES ERADICATION
We follow the World Health Organization guidelines which recommend mass vaccination of dogs as the most effective method of rabies eradication.
All dogs who are sterilized are vaccinated against rabies. In the municipal wards allocated to us we revaccinate street dogs as well.
We regularly vaccinate a large number of street dogs on site. In all we have protected 37,000 dogs against rabies. From May 2000 to May 2001 the Brihanmumbai (Greater Bombay) Municipal Corporation collaborated with us on this project.
WHAT MAKES OUR RABIES ERADICATION PROGRAMME UNIQUE?
-
Vaccination of street dogs on site.
-
The vaccination programme is supplemented by a public education programme on rabies prevention.
HEALTHCARE
We believe that in most cases a street dog recovers from an injury or ailment faster if he is not put through the stress of hospitalisation. Under our Healthcare programme, many sick and injured street dogs are treated in their own territory. A few serious cases are brought to our Mahalaxmi centre.
The on-site first-aid programme is carried out by our Manager-Projects Pooja Mishra and the WSD first aid team, and by a large number of trained volunteers. Groups in different areas of the city treat street dogs with wounds, skin problems and other ailments. The groups work every Sunday and on other days too when required. This activity also helps in the task of counting and identifying dogs who need to be sterilized. If a dog is difficult to restrain, has a more serious injury or requires hygienic surroundings for recovery, it is admitted at our Mahalaxmi centre for treatment.
Homeopathy clinic for animals: Once a week we help run a homeopathy clinic where pet and street animals are treated for a wide variety of problems including infections, spinal injuries, growths, skin disease and behaviour problems such as aggression. Street animals are treated free of charge. If you want to bring an animal for homeopathic treatment, call 91-22-64222838.
Twice a year we hold free workshops for the public on basic first-aid for street dogs. The WSD "SOS" Workshops are now well-established and very well attended. Contact us if you wish to attend the next one.
WHAT MAKES OUR HEALTHCARE PROGRAMME UNIQUE?
-
On-site treatment.
-
No-kill policy.
-
We educate as many people as possible on basic first-aid so the maximum number of dogs can receive medical care when required.
ADOPTION
We re-home many abandoned pets and also try to find good homes for street dogs. Each dog is put through a temperament test by trained volunteers. We believe the adoption procedure for a dog requires as much care as the adoption of a child. People who want to take dogs from us undergo a screening process including an interview. In some cases they are asked to visit the kennel several times prior to adoption so that they can develop a bond with their chosen pet. Dogs are only given away when we are sure the owners are caring, sincere and responsible. Dogs over 3 months of age are vaccinated against rabies before adoption.
An advertising and poster campaign was created for us by the advertising agency Bates India to popularise the adoption of pariah dogs and mongrels (mix-breeds). The photography was done by one of Mumbai’s best-known photographers, Atul Kasbekar.
In May 2003, we organised Mumbai’s first “Adoption Mela”. 10 of the 14 dogs put up for adoption got good homes, and the event received a lot of attention from the media. A second Mela in January 2005 was also very successful.
WHAT MAKES OUR ADOPTION PROGRAMME UNIQUE?
-
Strict screening procedure.
-
Behaviour and temperament testing of dogs prior to adoption.
-
Behaviour counselling post-adoption
EDUCATION AND AWARENESS
We believe that public acceptance is critical to the success of the sterilization program. Our education program reaches out to different sections of the public and explains the benefits of sterilizing dogs. It is also an important tool in the rabies eradication project, as we use it to communicate important information about rabies and its prevention.
We use the following methods to spread this message:
Presentations in schools. We cover dog-care, rabies prevention, the street dog issue and dog population control.
Presentations on dog bite and rabies prevention for municipal schools in Hindi and Marathi.
Presentations to groups such as Rotaract Clubs, Rotary Clubs and citizens groups
Rabies awareness drives in public places such as railway stations and parks
Leaflets on rabies in English, Hindi and Marathi distributed free at all WSD events
Posters, hoardings, leaflets, press ads and cinema slides for the general public
Stalls at events such as college festivals, exhibitions, fairs and dog-shows. Information panels are displayed at our outlets and leaflets are distributed. On an average we take part in two or three events every month. We also organize sales of our specially designed products in corporate offices; this provides additional opportunities to spread awareness
Visits to the kennels by school children, NGO and corporate groups
WHAT MAKES OUR EDUCATION PROGRAM UNIQUE?
-
Targets many different sections of society
-
A high level of interaction with the audience
-
A trained and specialised education team, led by our Education Managers, and a team of dedicated volunteers
